As always, we're here to help you get involved. Thus, the following are simple steps you can take to become more engaged in ARSA's legislative program.
Contact Daniel Fisher or Crystal Maguire with questions or feedback!
1. Learn About the Issues and Your Representatives
ARSA's Government Affairs Handbook and Legislative Priorities set the foundation for efforts in the current Congress. The Government Affairs Handbook covers legislative priorities, grassroots advocacy, and all aspects of the ARSA legislative program. This document is your "one-stop" for all advocacy needs.
- Download ARSA's Government Affairs Handbook.
- Download ARSA's Legislative Priorities for the 111th Congress.
- Know who the key players are. Use ARSAAction.org to get more information on contacting your Federal and State legislators.
- Familiarize yourself with the member of Congress by visiting www.opensecrets.org and www.congress.org. These sites will allow you to review the members background and the industries that support them. This information will help you determine their stance on issues and give you some personal tidbits about them.
2. Communicate With Congress
- Visit ARSAAction.org and write letters to members of Congress on issues that matter to you. You can use the site to send pre-written letters electronically, or to find your representatives' contact information and write your own letter.
- Schedule a meeting with your representatives. Customize this letter solicit a meeting at the official’s DC office. Once you finish filling in the blanks, you can print, sign, and fax it to your official’s Washington office.
- Develop a company profile. Give a copy of the profile to the person(s) you meet with, or send it along with your letters to members of Congress so they know more about your company and how important it is to their district and state!
3. Get Involved in Your Own Community
A successful advocacy program depends on the involvement of ARSA members. Attending town hall meetings in your hometown is an excellent opportunity to get face time with your members of Congress, and to help the Association develop a strong grassroots program.
Check your member of Congress’ web site at www.congress.org to see whether there are town hall meetings scheduled in your area.
4. Contribute
ARSA has a separate lobbying fund to pay for efforts such as defeating repair station security legislation, protecting the use of foreign repair stations and preventing laws detrimental to your businesses from being passed. This fund can accept corporate and personal funds.
