Guidance/tools

FAA Human Factors Operators Manual
The FAA issued this 22-page guide in October 2005. Compiled with significant input from industry, it covers the basics that should be in any introductory human factors program. The site has a Web version as well as .pdf versions in Chinese, English and Spanish.

AC 145-10, Repair Station Training Program (.pdf)
Issued in July 2005, this advisory circular (AC) discusses human factors training programs for FAA-certificated repair stations. Following an ARSA request, the FAA has agreed to update language in the AC to reflect that HF training is not a mandatory element of a part 145 training program.

AC 120-72, Maintenance Resource Management Training (.pdf)
Released in 2000, this AC includes sample slides and notes that a facilitator could use to help develop an HF program.

'Mandatory' U.S. human factors guidance
In July 2006, ARSA requested that the FAA clarify (.pdf) whether HF training was required by part 145, as several guidance documents seemed to suggest. In September 2006, the FAA responded that it would update its guidance (.pdf) to reflect that part 145's training program provision has no human factors requirement. The agency added, however, that it would seek to make human factors mandatory via a rule change.
